Saturday Nov 29, 2008

Im learning Portuguese
i have been learningo for 6 months i am almost Fluent!

Im learning because the portuguese congregation of Jehovah's witnesses needs the support

Why are you learning a new language and what language is it?

I'm learning spanish because my congregation is kind of close to a spanish congregation (about 45 min). I've been to mexico and would like to take some time in a year or two and travel down there to preach the good news. I'm learning a little sign language as well.

Congrats on your language! Portuguese sounds hard. How may I ask are you learning and how often do you take the time to study? I've been studying spanish a little over a month and I get frustrated time to time but I keep hanging in there! :)

POYW Reprise (European Portuguese) w/Subs&Trans

Saturday Nov 29, 2008

I was bored so I translated this song. =D I’m still learning portuguese, so there might be mistakes, but I don’t think so. If there are mistakes, I’m sure Bruno could correct them. ^_^

This my favorite version of Part of your World (Reprise). It’s the European Portuguese one. «3 It’s sung by Anabela Pires and she has a beautiful voice. I really like the lyrics and well.. I hope you enjoy it, even though youtube screwed the quality of the video. *slaps youtube*

Portuguese Culture Shock with Catrina Maria Luiz

Thursday Nov 27, 2008

You guy’s asked for her and here she is!

I must admit the presentation is a little poor, but I promise the next time I do one of these she will be looking up to speed. Also pardon the shuddering… I had done about three takes by this point and I was a bit tired.

Rate and Comment if you’d like. Thank you and hope you enjoy the video!
~ME!

*Background to the story:
8-13-08 I was in Drive Thru at work when a Mexican guy asks for someone that can speak Spanish, well the lady behind him was a Portuguese lady who heard the man talking. Thus the lines “Eh speak eh Spanish?!”

And the first half has to do with the fact that a lot of old Portuguese parents complain that they’re kids should be learning Portuguese better rather than learn English cause its hard for older folks to learn Portuguese….
I think its a little easier to understand if you have or know an old fashioned Portuguese person. Also knowing what is being said in this video helps too…LOL*

Learning portuguese in the middle of learning spanish?

Thursday Nov 27, 2008

Hey, I had a question about the Spanish + Portuguese.. I’ve been studying Spanish for a short while now, I can speak in conversation decently with bad grammar of course. I managed to place into my Spanish211 at my university in 3 months of teaching myself (which requires 4 years of high school or 2 semester of college Spanish). Yeah I like Spanish a bit too much… but anyways, after I’m done with this semester of Spanish I should have a pretty dang good understanding of the grammar. Then I want to take the next semester of Spanish with Portuguese.. I guess my question is, would that be a good enough base of Spanish to not confuse me and maybe help me learn Portuguese? I’m very serious about both.

I think you cannot think in Portuguese a base to learn Spanish. The both languages are a little alike, yes, but there are differences mostly in vocabulary (ahn sorry my english is bad at times).

I found a Portuguese lessons video on youtube, maybe it will help you deciding. If you think it won't confuse you then go on, if you think it will.. I mean, try to see if you understand.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tmlEvCcjPug

It's hard for me to say if it is confusing or not =P I grew up with Portuguese but I learnt Spanish from Doraemon when I was younger.

Edit: It seems that Spanish people can't understand Portuguese (unless they read it instead of having a conversation), but I can understand Galician language (when in a conversation) but not Catalan language.

But I think you should see the diferences by yourself.

French, Portuguese or Italian - which language is most worth learning?

Tuesday Nov 25, 2008

I know French traditionally would be considered one of the most worthwhile language to learn, due to the ex French colonial empire, and it’s status as a diplomatic language, but lots of people have told me French is on the decline and not really worth learning anymore. Apparently, although language is technically an official language of quite a few African countries, in reality, not many normal people of those countries actually speak it - they speak native African languages and French is only used as an administrative language.

So, I was wondering whether Italian and Portuguese would be more worth learning than French? Especially Portuguese as Brazil is set to become a significant power in the not so distant future. Also, in sheer amount of speakers, Italian and Portuguese has a greater number than French.

So, do you think French still has it’s worth, or is there better languages to be learnt in the sense of international usage?

It honestly depends where you are going to be, and who you plan to converse with. I do not have any personal experience with any of these languages besides Italian, but I’ll give you my opinion on all three of them.

French, like you said, is probably the second “international language”, but you are correct that it is a little bit on the decline. The thing about French is, the MAJORITY of it’s NATIVE speakers live in either Canada (mostly Quebec) and France. There are also a ton of second or third language speakers of French. The thing about French is, from my observations of friends and fellow students speaking French in public situations is that the French are not patient with poor French…. at all. French supposedly also has the most difficult grammar out of all the Romance languages, and it’s pronunciation has gone through several “shifts” within the last several hundred years, so it is a difficult language to pronounce. And that is not even taking into the account the many phonemes that do not exist AT ALL in English (especially the nasal consonants). However, if you plan to live/do business in France or Quebec, i would consider it a great language to learn.

Portuguese could also be a useful language, depending on where you live and who you do business with, but be aware that it is really only spoken in Brazil and Portugal, and even in Portugal they speak a ton of Spanish. From what I’ve heard, in Portugal it is “fashionable” for the older generation to speak French, and the younger generation speaks a lot of Spanish. Supposedly, the dialect from Portugal is quite different from that of Brazil. In fact, the same is true with French: my “Quebecian” friend that lives in Quebec says that when he watches movies from France, he has to use subtitles!

Italian is a beautiful language that in my opinion, is just as easy to learn as Spanish (which I am learning) or Portuguese. Again, pretty much confined to a small geographical region, but there are plenty of Italian-Americans that I sometimes talk to in the states. But then again, it’s usally in an Italian restuarant.

So if I had to summarize this whole thing, I would really consider which language you think would be the most important to YOU!

help learning Portuguese?

Sunday Nov 23, 2008

My grand parent are portuguese and they keep trying to teach me so can any one help me learn???????????

Olá, Jessica! Como está?

How wonderful that your grandparents want you to learn their language! And what a beautiful, rich language it is! You're lucky.

Eu modero um grupo de Yahoo dedicado ao português. (I moderate a Yahoo group for people learning Portuguese.) In addition to the students of Portuguese, we have lots of native speakers, and we all help each other. It's like having lots of penpals who all write each other. It's fun!

I've been designing lessons and actividades to accompany all the (free!) resources that are on the web (exercícios for songs on YouTube, por exemplo).

If this sounds interesting to you, click either here or on my icon:

I hope to see you soon!
