I'm am currently studying Brazilian Portuguese and my teacher suggested that one good way to become aquainted with the language is to listen to Brazilian music. So I would like to know who are some of the popular artists in Brazil right now.

O corpo da vereadora de Santos (litoral de São Paulo) Sandra Regina Machado Arantes do Nascimento Felinto, filha de Pelé, foi enterrado na manhã desta quarta-feira no cemitério Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica. Sandra morreu na terça (17), em decorrência de um câncer de mama.
O velório foi realizado no salão nobre da prefeitura. O corpo chegou ao cemitério por volta das 9h45 e, meia hora depois, ocorria o sepultamento.Sandra descobriu que tinha câncer em maio do ano passado. Ela teve que passar por uma cirurgia para retirada da mama direita e quimioterapia. Recentemente, descobriu que a doença havia afetado também a mama esquerda.
No domingo (15), a vereadora foi internada no Hospital da Beneficência Portuguesa com problemas respiratórios e, às 9h de ontem, teve uma parada cardiorrespiratória.
Segundo a médica Martha Perdicaris, que acompanhou o caso desde o início, a vereadora foi resistente ao tratamento. “Alertamos várias vezes que ela não poderia postergá-lo, mas ela dizia que tinha muitas atividades e que não podia.” DNA e política. Sandra ficou conhecida depois de enfrentar uma longa disputa judicial para obrigar Pelé a reconhecê-la como filha. Pelé recorreu 13 vezes, mas perdeu.
Durante o processo, ele foi obrigado a fazer um exame de DNA. Confirmada a paternidade, em 1996, Sandra conseguiu mudar o sobrenome e acrescentar o do pai.
Freqüentadora da Assembléia de Deus e estudante de direito, Sandra era casada e tinha dois filhos –de 6 e de 8 anos. Nascida no Guarujá, ela cumpria seu segundo mandato como vereadora de Santos pelo PSC. No cargo, conseguiu a aprovação de um projeto de lei que garante a realização de testes de DNA gratuitamente a pacientes da rede pública.
Nas eleições de 1º de outubro ela tentou sem sucesso uma das vagas na Assembléia Legislativa de São Paulo também pelo PSC. Sandra teve 19.914 votos (cerca de 0,01%).
Morte
Pelé recebeu a notícia da morte de Sandra em seu carro, quando seguia para uma reunião, em São Paulo. Segundo sua assessoria de imprensa, ele lamentou e afirmou ter “rezado muito” por ela, na noite anterior.
Pelé informou que não iria nem ao velório nem ao enterro de Sandra. Segundo sua assessoria, ele não costuma ir a velórios porque se sente mal.
Para marcar sua presença nas cerimônias, Pelé enviou uma coroa de flores ao local do velório. A mãe de Sandra, a dona-de-casa Anisia Machado, no entanto, mandou que as flores fossem retiradas de perto do caixão e deixadas em outra sala.

It is better to learn Spanish for job opportunities, however if you have a good technical background either language will give good job advantages. Brazil is a growing country with several opportunites for qualified bilingual people, however in America Spanish is the best choice. Only a few countries speak Portuguese, Brazil being the largest with about 180 million people, the 5th in population and also in size.

I would like to dedicate this song to all Timorese who are outside East Timor, especially the Timorese students who are studying in Portugal, Cuba, Korea, Indonesia, Norway, Australia, US, Philippines and different parts of the world. I asked myself what suppose to be the main message in this song- for my Timorese friends who are studying overseas. Well, I would like to say that wherever we are, as students, theres a feeling of missing and yearning to go back to our homeland, Timor Lorosae. There is a feeling of almost giving up because of the challenges and difficulties. But this feeling and yearning should not be merely a cogito that turns us to be a homesick and loosing hope. This feeling should be concretized in an opposite way, especially through our commitment to do our best in our studies for we are the future of our young nation. When we return to our homeland, there should be something novel in each one of us that we would like to contribute to our tiny land. Wherever we are, this should be our dream.

I speak Spanish and I have studied Italian and am currently studying Portuguese. In my opinion, I think that for a Spanish speaker who has never studied Portuguese or Italian that he would understand Italian better because all the vowels are pronounced very clearly like in Spanish and in Portuguese they go by quicker depending on where the vowel is so even if the words are similar you might not hear it very well. BUT I think if a Spanish speaker had at least a very small understanding of how Portuguese works that he would understand Portuguese better than Italian.
When it comes to reading, I think Spanish speakers will find that its rather easy to grasp the general meaning of both Portuguese and Italian but maybe more so with Portuguese.
Anyone have a similar or different opinion??
Haruka: Actually, Portuguese is also a Romance language, so is Romanian and French. They all have some similarities.
A: I somewhat agree with you but there are som accents in which it is spoken faster and I say Italian is easier to understand because Portuguese has different sounds for some consonants depending on what vowel procedes it.
You are absolutely right. For Spanish speakers it is easier to understand spoken Italian, but written Portuguese. It is easier for Portuguese speakers to understand Spanish, both written and spoken.

Is it a good idea career wise to study at a university abroad? id like to go to a portuguese university (Coimbra???) to study modern languages, french, spanish, portuguese. I would also quite like to go to an english university, but finding it difficult to decide… opinions anyone?
thanks for the help, the lower fees aspect is definitely a plus, but will studying abroad have an affect on my career propects?
University in Portugal will save you a lot of money in fees, and it will be an invaluable experience for you, as well as great for your language skills since you’re learning it while you’re actually there. Anyone else would leap at the oppurtunity!
